Preview of the 149th Belmont Stakes

Twisted Tom is a horse that can easily be overlooked looking at the program but if you look deeper you can make a case for him. His dam is by 1995 Belmont winner Thunder Gultch, his 2nd dam is by 1977 Belmont winner Seattle Slew, his third dam is by 1968 Belmont winner Stage Door Johnny, and his 4th dam is by the sire of 1978 Belmont winner affirmed. Thats some serious Belmont blood. Combine that with the fact that his trainer Chad Brown is on fire as of late and you have a live longshot.

Tapwrit is an over rated horse in my opinion. Outside of his success in Tampa he really hasn’t done much to impress. Tampa success for whatever reason never seems to translate to other tracks.

Gormley although was a non factor in the Derby. You have to toss that race based on the track conditions and the fact he was very wide. He may not be very push button fast but  he is a random grinder type that is bred well and might be able to outlast a lot of the field.

J Boys Echo is another horse that I feel is overrated. Take away his Gotham Stakes win and he is a very average horse with little upside.

Hollywood Handsome is the longest shot on the board but is one of only two horses coming into the race off a win and is trained by Dallas Stewart who has a tendency to bomb exotics at a price in these Triple Crown races.

Lookin At Lee will be the only horse to run in all three legs of the Triple Crown. Seems the type that will love more distance but is he worn down? This will be his 4th race in 8 weeks.

Irish War Cry faded hard in the derby as he did in the Fountain Of Youth. His pattern has been one good race, then tank, one good race, then tank, will he hold for and run a big one? Could head for the lead and try to outlast everyone. Could be considered class of the field with Classic Empire scratching.

Senior Investment finished 3rd in the Preakness while making a nice closing move. I can see him sitting closer this time and improving again to hit the board at a price.

Meantime finished 2nd in the Peter Pan which has been a spring board to the Belmont in the past. The same path Tonalist took in 2014 when he won the Belmont and crushed the Triple Crown hopes of California Chrome. However Tonalist won the Peter Pan. Not a fan of this one and will give him a chance to beat me.

Multiplier I think could be in over his head here but with the unpredictability of Belmont it’s worth a shot for his connections. Not the greatest pedigree or past performances.

Epicharis is a Japan shipper which makes him hard to handicap. He finished 2nd to derby non finisher Thunder Snow in the UAE Derby. His grand sire is Sunday Silence and his pedigree suggest he will like the distance. Very tough horse to handicap due to the foreign aspect of his career and even the bottom of his pedigree. If the 4-1 holds im tossing him. Its the Belmont and im swinging for the fences.

Patch is sired by Belmont winner Union Rags and has the pedigree to suggest he could handle the distance. He was bet down hard with sympathy money in the Derby due to his one eye. Id expect odds that are more fair for this race. He has a shot.

Betting Belmont and Swinging For The Fences

For me, betting the Belmont is always about low risk, high reward. None of these horses are trained to run a mile and half none-the-less have they ever run or ever will again a mile and a half. For that brings complete unpredicability into the race and the chance for a nice score. This year the field is not the greatest of strength which leads to the likelyhood of some huge exotics payouts. Here are the horses I like at a price use them in either exotics or win bets and remember SWING FOR THE FENCES!

3 Gormley 8-1

8 Senior Investment 12-1

12 Patch 12-1

1 Twisted Tom 20-1
