Conventional knowledge vs. a 20 month old

Claire vs. Conventional Wisdom. You would think that conventional wisdom would beat out a 20 month old any day right? Well not the last 2 weeks in fantasy football. In the last 2 weeks, my 20 months old daughter picked better QBs than I did, than ESPN did, and better than NFL.com did. She was very close on RBs and way off on WRs. I say this not to knock the industry, my judgement or any others, but to show how truly odd this fantasy season has been.

Top 5 QBs on ESPN:

Alex Smith

Deshaun Watson

Tom Brady

Dak Prescott

Aaron Rodgers

Raise your hand if you had anyone but Brady and Rodgers in your top 5? Unless you’re a Cowboys fan and your hand is in the air, you lie! Not one single person I’ve spoken to or article I’ve read had Watson or Smith in top 10, let alone the top 2!

Top 5 RBs on ESPN

Kareem Hunt

Todd Gurley

Leonard Fournette

Leveon Bell

Melvin Gordon

Most people would have tabbed Bell as a sure thing top 5. No one had Kareem Hunt or Leonard Fournette. It’s possible someone had Melvin Gordon. I’m a Toledo Alumni and I had no idea Hunt would break out the way he has. He is the key to the 5-0 Kansas City Chiefs!

Top 5 WRs

DeAndre Hopkins

Antonio Brown

AJ Green

Stefon Diggs

Chris Hogan

Everyone had AB and Green in their top 5. A hand full of people may have put Hopkins in the top 5, but I doubt it with the QB situation going into the season. No one saw Diggs and Hogan as top 5 WRs this season. Alas, here we are with these guys leading our fantasy teams each weekend. This season will most likely be won by excellent picks in round 3-8 and the waiver wire.

If you read Matthew Berry’s Love/Hate article this week, you see the stress and time constraints that come with being the face of Fantasy Football for a Global company. I do about 4 hours of research each week and about 2 hours of actual physical writing. I also don’t count on this as my means of income to pay my mortgage or car payments as Berry does. I wish him well and that he takes care of himself. He went through a very scary incident. If you haven’t read his column this week, finish reading mine and then go read his. I have nothing but respect for that man.

Each week this year I have been streaming a DST that is owned in less than 50% of leagues. I have been successful in 4 out of 5 weeks picking a top 10 defense. This week I will stream the Rams. Am I nuts? The Jags have been running through everyone with Fournette. No, the Rams and Wade Phillips will figure out to stop the Jags. They will need to load the box and stop Fournette. They need to let Blake Bortles beat them. Does anyone reading this have faith that the Jags win if Bortles throws 30+ times?

I’ve said too much, I haven’t said enough….

QB

Tier 1

Aaron Rodgers

Tom Brady

Deshaun Watson

Matt Ryan

Tier 2

Drew Brees

Kirk Cousins

Alex Smith

Josh McCown(yes really. NE Defense is terrible)

Case Keenum

Tier 3

Marcus Mariota

Matthew Stafford

Jameis Winston

Trevor Siemian

Tier 4

Philip Rivers

Derek Carr

Jacoby Brissett

Wild Card: Ben Roethlisberger. Everyone is talking about his 5 pick game against the Jags. He faces a defense that is probably better than the Jags and he has something to prove. Can AB beat Marcus Peters? Will this be a shootout? Ben with a monster game or awful game. Homerun or Strike out.

RB

Tier 1

Leonard Fournette

Todd Gurley

Leveon Bell

Kareem Hunt

Melvin Gordon

Tier 2

Devonta Freeman

C.J. Anderson

Demarco Murray

Jordan Howard

Buck Allen

Tier 3

Lamar Miller

Mark Ingram(Could be Kamara)

Marshawn Lynch(If not this week...when?)

Doug Martin

Jerick McKinnon

Tier 4

Carlos Hyde(Brieda taking his snaps?)

Jay Ajayi

Alvin Kamara(could be Ingram here)

Duke Johnson

Tier 5

Aaron Jones

Elijah McGuire

Samaje Perine

Mike Gillislee

Tier 6

Ty Montgomery

Chris Thompson

Andre Ellington(PPR)

Frank Gore

Alex Collins

Tier 7

Tarik Cohen

James White

Ameer Abdullah

Marlon Mack

Derrick Henry

Matt Brieda

Wild Card: Adrian Peterson. I have no idea how the Cardinals will use their running backs this week. I don’t think many people do. Ellington is the superior pass catcher and AP is the superior ball carrier. Without a full week of practice, I don’t know how many snaps AP will see. I’m betting most of the running situations.
